The Sam Wanamaker Playhouse is a unique, candlelit indoor theatre nestled within Shakespeare’s Globe in London. Unlike the outdoor Globe Theatre, this intimate venue is modelled on the indoor playhouses familiar to Shakespeare and his contemporaries in the early 17th century.

With its distinctive use of over 100 beeswax candles, the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse offers an atmospheric experience that transports audiences back to the theatrical traditions of Shakespeare’s London. Open year-round, the Playhouse hosts a rich programme of plays, concerts, and educational events, primarily running from October to April. Read our Best Seats Guide to help you decide wear to sit.

The History of the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse

Named after Sam Wanamaker, the visionary founder of Shakespeare’s Globe, the Playhouse was designed to echo the early indoor playhouses such as the Blackfriars Theatre used by Shakespeare’s company from 1609. Although not an exact replica, the Playhouse’s architecture was inspired by 17th-century designs by John Webb, a former assistant to Inigo Jones.

The brick shell of the theatre was constructed alongside the Globe but remained unused until 2012 when it was converted into a working theatre. Since its opening, the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse has hosted a variety of notable performances that celebrate the rich heritage of early modern English theatre.
