The history of Sadler’s Wells

Sadler’s Wells has a rich history dating back to 1683, when Richard Sadler opened the original music house around a medicinal well. Over the centuries, it evolved from a spa venue to a music hall, and finally, a respected theatre dedicated to dance. The current building, opened in 1998, is the sixth on the site and was purpose-built for dance, offering state-of-the-art acoustics and production facilities.

Over time, the venue has been home to legendary performers and companies such as The Royal Ballet, Matthew Bourne’s New Adventures, and Akram Khan Company, reinforcing Sadler’s Wells’ reputation as a centre of excellence for the dance world.

Where is Sadler’s Wells?

Sadler’s Wells is located in Islington, North London, just a short walk from Angel station. The area is well-connected and vibrant, with plenty of cafés, restaurants, and shops nearby, making it a great location for a pre- or post-show outing.

The nearest tube station to Sadler’s Wells is Angel (Northern Line). It’s a 5-minute walk from the tube. Just exit the station, turn left on Islington High Street, and walk straight onto St John Street until you reach Rosebery Avenue - Sadler’s Wells will be on your left.

Sadler’s Wells nearest train station

The closest National Rail station is King’s Cross St Pancras, which is one stop away on the Northern Line from Angel or around a 20-minute walk. From King’s Cross, you can also take several buses directly to the theatre.

Buses to Sadler’s Wells

Bus routes 19, 38, and 341 run frequently along Rosebery Avenue and stop directly outside Sadler’s Wells. These routes connect with key areas such as Waterloo, Piccadilly Circus, and London Bridge. Night buses N19 and N38 also serve the area.

Sadler’s Wells Theatre has a seating capacity of approximately 1,500 across three levels: Stalls, First Circle, and Second Circle. The Stalls offer the closest and most immersive views of the stage, especially for dance, where details matter. The Circles provide a broader, elevated perspective, ideal for group choreography and full-stage visuals.

Accessible seating is available in the Stalls with step-free entry, and audio-described, captioned, and signed performances are regularly offered.

Sadler’s Wells accessibility

The theatre is wheelchair accessible, with step-free access to the main auditorium, adapted toilets, hearing assistance systems, and seating available for patrons with limited mobility. Assistance dogs are welcome.

Sadler’s Wells maintains high safety standards, with bag checks upon entry, clearly marked exits, and trained staff on hand at all times. Enhanced cleaning and hygiene protocols are also in place.

There is no formal dress code at Sadler’s Wells. Attendees often opt for comfortable clothing. There’s no need for evening wear, unless you want to dress up for a gala or premiere event.

We recommend using public transportation to get to Sadler’s Wells. The nearest underground station to Sadler’s Wells is Angel Station (Northern Line). Sadler’s Wells has its own bus stop which is serviced by lines 19, 38 and 341. If you are driving to Sadler’s Wells there is free On-street in Hardwick Street and other streets off Rosebery Avenue on weekdays after 6.30pm and from 1.30pm on Saturdays Do NOT park in resident’s bays.  The nearest car park outside the congestion zone is Parkfield Street and there is a large car park in Bowling Green Lane.

Yes, you can pre-order drinks at the bar before the performance or during the interval via the theatre’s website or in person at the venue.

Outside drinks are generally not allowed. However, bottled water is permitted. Drinks purchased at the venue’s bars can usually be taken into the auditorium.

It’s best to arrive at least 30 minutes before the performance to allow time for bag checks, ticket collection, and to grab a drink or use the facilities.
