Acclaimed rising star Thom Southerland will direct this brand new production of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Tony and Olivier-Award nominated musical, The Woman in White in a strictly limited season.
A tempestuous tale of love, betrayal and greed, adapted from Wilkie Collins’ haunting Victorian thriller, this is the premiere of Andrew Lloyd Webber and David Zippel’s revised score.
Walter Hartright’s life is changed forever after a chance encounter with a mysterious woman, dressed in white, desperate to reveal her chilling secret. When he takes up his position as drawing master to the beautiful Laura Fairlie and her half-sister, Marian, he sees in Laura’s face an eerie reflection of the forlorn creature he met previously. Walter and Laura’s feelings for each other are thwarted by her engagement to the sinister Sir Percival Glyde. What is the connection between, Laura, Sir Percival, and the woman in white? Can true love prevail?

Running strictly for a 12-week limited period and set in the atmospheric Charing Cross Theatre, The Woman in White is showing off its gothic side in a wonderfully intimate space. This is the premiere of Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber’s and David Zippel’s, albeit reread and revised, score. The set is masterfully simple and the singing, together with the harmonies, are sublime. Don’t be fooled into thinking you are in for an easy, peaceful night at the theatre, there will be lots of jumping in your seat. If you have a slightly nervy disposition, make sure you have someone to hang onto!

Andrew Lloyd Webber fans will not be disappointed by his musical interpretation of The Woman in White. As a fan of the eponymous Wilkie Collins novel, I was also not disappointed.

It may be Christmas time, the season of cheer, but who doesn’t love a good tragedy. Well, The Woman in White is the most perfect Christmas tragedy; not via theme but in the sense that no one can be too sad watching a tragedy in which every word is sung. This production, brought to you by Andrew Lloyd Webber himself, is moving in every way you would expect from a musical.
