Part One of Mike Poulton’s two part Imperium adaptation is told through the eyes of Cicero’s loyal secretary Tiro, Imperium follows Cicero through highs and lows, wars, disasters and successes. This historical thriller from Royal Shakespeare Company comes after a critically acclaimed sell-out season in Stratford-upon-Avon.
Mike Poulton, previously known for his incredible RSC adaptations of Hilary Mantel’s Wolf Hall and Bring Up the Bodies, has rewritten the histories of Ancient Rome with his adaptation of Robert Harris’ best-selling novels dubbed the Cicero Trilogy. Directed by Gregory Doran, these acclaimed RSC productions of Imperium enjoyed a sold-out season in the Swan Theatre and are now preparing to transfer to the West End’s Gielgud Theatre. Imperium I: Conspirator will play for a strictly limited season from 14 June-8 September. Reprising their roles from the original run will be Tony Award-winner Richard McCabe (The Audience) as Cicero and Joseph Kloska (The Crown, RSC's Written on the Heart) as Tiro.
Cicero has bested his rival Catiline and been unanimously voted President of the Roman state. Furious Catiline vows revenge, an oath to destroy Cicero and the government and take Rome by force, if necessary. And how does young Caesar fit into it all? Popular, ruthless and hungry for power, Cicero is certain that Caesar is behind the conspiracy. It is said he who controls the mob controls Rome. With so many players in the game, it is nearly impossible to say who will come out on top.
Part I: Conspirator is told through the perspective of Cicero's faithful secretary and follows how the great orator's early triumphs spell a bloody and brutal disaster for the Republic.

Don't miss the continuation of the Imperium saga with Imperium II: Dictator, playing 21 June - 8 September 2018. All persons aged under 16 must be accompanied and sat next to the accompanying adult. They may not sit on their own within the auditorium. If children do have separate seats, entry could be refused. All patrons, regardless of age, must present a valid ticket to gain entry to the theatre. Please ensure that any children or infants for whom you are responsible also have a valid ticket. Your child should be able to sit unaided within the purchased seat. We do not allow children to be seated on an adult’s lap or babes in arms.
La question, en voyant qu’Imperium est une histoire en deux parties, est de savoir si vous devez voir les deux parties. Je comprends que vous n’ayez pas d’argent, pas de temps et oui, les deux parties durent plus de 3 heures, cependant, je soutiendrais à la fois pour et contre la vision des deux parties. Les Parties I et II semblent assez contenées en tant qu’histoires, la Partie I se concentrant sur la conspiration contre Cicéron de Richard McCabe et la Partie II sur la vie après Jules César, mais je soutiendrais que les deux parties doivent être vues comme le développement de Cicéron en tant qu’homme, orateur et comme quelqu’un qui apporte de la chaleur à une période froide de l’histoire pleine de scandales, Sexe et trahisons.
J’ai choisi de les critiquer séparément car, bien qu’il s’agisse de productions cohérentes, il y a des développements importants dans les deux histoires qui façonnent la façon dont les productions se terminent. Tous les chemins mènent au Théâtre Gielgud pour Imperium, une épopée en deux parties incontournable qui donne vie au monde de la Rome antique. Le récit relate l’ascension de Cicéron (Richard McCabe) et la chute de la République romaine. Tiron joue l'esclave de Cicéron, qui sert également de narrateur aux deux pièces, Joseph Kloska, une talentueuse star anglaise très prolifique dans des œuvres historiques d'époque. Kloska a été universellement salué pour sa performance, qualifiée à la fois de « magnifique » et de « vivante » (WhatsOnStage).
