Part One of Mike Poulton’s two part Imperium adaptation is told through the eyes of Cicero’s loyal secretary Tiro, Imperium follows Cicero through highs and lows, wars, disasters and successes. This historical thriller from Royal Shakespeare Company comes after a critically acclaimed sell-out season in Stratford-upon-Avon.
Mike Poulton, previously known for his incredible RSC adaptations of Hilary Mantel’s Wolf Hall and Bring Up the Bodies, has rewritten the histories of Ancient Rome with his adaptation of Robert Harris’ best-selling novels dubbed the Cicero Trilogy. Directed by Gregory Doran, these acclaimed RSC productions of Imperium enjoyed a sold-out season in the Swan Theatre and are now preparing to transfer to the West End’s Gielgud Theatre. Imperium I: Conspirator will play for a strictly limited season from 14 June-8 September. Reprising their roles from the original run will be Tony Award-winner Richard McCabe (The Audience) as Cicero and Joseph Kloska (The Crown, RSC's Written on the Heart) as Tiro.
Cicero has bested his rival Catiline and been unanimously voted President of the Roman state. Furious Catiline vows revenge, an oath to destroy Cicero and the government and take Rome by force, if necessary. And how does young Caesar fit into it all? Popular, ruthless and hungry for power, Cicero is certain that Caesar is behind the conspiracy. It is said he who controls the mob controls Rome. With so many players in the game, it is nearly impossible to say who will come out on top.
Part I: Conspirator is told through the perspective of Cicero's faithful secretary and follows how the great orator's early triumphs spell a bloody and brutal disaster for the Republic.

Don't miss the continuation of the Imperium saga with Imperium II: Dictator, playing 21 June - 8 September 2018. All persons aged under 16 must be accompanied and sat next to the accompanying adult. They may not sit on their own within the auditorium. If children do have separate seats, entry could be refused. All patrons, regardless of age, must present a valid ticket to gain entry to the theatre. Please ensure that any children or infants for whom you are responsible also have a valid ticket. Die Frage, wenn man sieht, dass Imperium eine zweiteilige Geschichte ist, ist, ob man beide Teile sehen muss. Ich verstehe, dass du kein Geld, keine Zeit hast und ja, beide Teile dauern über 3 Stunden, aber ich würde sowohl für als auch gegen das Betrachten beider Teile argumentieren. Teil I und Teil II wirken als Geschichten recht abgeschlossen, wobei Teil I sich auf die Verschwörung gegen Richard McCabes Cicero konzentriert und Teil II auf das Leben nach Julius Caesar, aber ich würde argumentieren, dass beide Teile für die Entwicklung von Cicero als Mann, Redner und als jemand, der einer kalten Periode voller Skandale Wärme verleiht, gesehen werden müssen. Sex und Hinterhältigkeit.
Ich habe mich entschieden, sie separat zu rezensieren, weil sie zwar kohärente Produktionen sind, aber in beiden Geschichten einige wichtige Entwicklungen sind, die den Ablauf der Produktionen prägen. Alle Wege führen zum Gielgud-Theater für Imperium, ein unverzichtbares, zweiteiliges Epos, das die Welt des antiken Rom zum Leben erweckt. Die Geschichte schildert den Aufstieg von Cicero (Richard McCabe) und den Fall der römischen Republik. Als Ciceros Sklave spielt Tiro, der auch als Erzähler der beiden Stücke fungiert, Joseph Kloska, ein talentierter englischer Star, der in historischen Historienstücken äußerst produktiv ist. Kloska wurde für seine Darbietung allgemein gelobt, die sowohl als 'großartig' als auch als 'lebendig' bezeichnet wurde (WhatsOnStage).
